The same company had invested heavily in an internal network with a small data center only two years earlier, but now it was joining the 96% of companies that use a public cloud.

The IT staff welcomed the move to cloud because they could outsource more day-to-day IT and keep their internal staff lean. Users also welcomed the move because the company could scale resources, such as networks, quickly and deftly.

Once IT shifted to the cloud, the next step was to revise network documentation. This was when the network staff experienced its “aha” moment, as everyone recognized that the topology of the network was now so different that the network had been reinvented. It was a network that still had physical contact points within the data center, but it mostly directed traffic within and between clouds.

The network staff discovered they, too, had to change — in how they performed daily operations, monitored activities and performance, enforced security, provisioned new resources and planned for load balancing and failover.

Related:NVIDIA Beefs up its AI Security Capabilities with DOCA Argus

Changes Brought on by a Network Move to Cloud

When a network extends to the cloud, daily network operations change. This is a truism not only for small companies, but for larger ones as well. Security Vulnerabilities and Loss of Control

Before companies started extending networks into the cloud, they primarily administered security enforcement on internal networks. Network staff used technologies such as identity access management (IAM) to track user activities internally and at a basic level in the cloud. They used security monitoring software for the internal network, and they secured network endpoints and devices. They also had ways to rapidly issue security updates to systems and devices.

With the move of more networking to the cloud, however, IT loses much of the visibility it had into security and user activities. IAM can’t give network staff granular looks into user access and activities across clouds, so teams have to consider new identity management options.

One such option is cloud identity entitlement management (CIEM), which can provide the same level of granular visibility in the cloud that the network staff has on premises with IAM. Additionally, companies face a future need for an overarching identity management package, such as identity governance administration, that can integrate both CIEM and IAM in a single pane of glass.

Related:Edge Computing and the Burgeoning IoT Security Threat

Network security and monitoring also change. With cloud-based networks, the network staff no longer has all its management software under its direct control. It now must work with its various cloud providers on security.

In this environment, some small company network staff opt to outsource security and network management to their cloud providers. Larger companies that want more direct control might prefer to upskill their network staff on the different security and configuration toolsets that each cloud provider makes available.

2. Network Support for a Cloud-Enabled Company

The move of applications and systems to more cloud services is in part fueled by the growth of citizen IT. This is when end users in departments have mini IT budgets and subscribe to new IT cloud services, of which IT and network groups aren’t always aware.

This creates potential security vulnerabilities, and it forces more network groups to segment networks into smaller units for greater control. They should also implement zero-trust networks that can immediately detect any IT resource, such as a cloud service, that a user adds, subtracts or changes on the network.

Related:IAM and CIEM Boost Network Security and 360-Degree Visibility

3. Disaster Recovery

Network managers are also discovering that they need to rewrite their disaster recovery plans for cloud. The strategies and operations that were developed for the internal network are still relevant. But once the network extends into the cloud, network staff has to be prepared for an interruption of service that could occur anywhere, whether it’s in the physical or virtual network world.

It can be complex to work out a new network disaster recovery plan that encompasses both cloud and on-premises networks. Teams must coordinate with outside cloud providers that host enterprise network services. The discussions can quickly involve administrative and contractual issues as well as network recovery issues.

Final Thoughts

Companies can benefit from using cloud-based resources to expand the reach of corporate networks, which is why almost every company’s network staff is pushing a move to the cloud. However, with an extended network reach that relies on outsourced resources, the security vulnerability surface also broadens. This requires more comprehensive approaches to security and governance, as well as a plethora of new toolsets that network staff must master to keep up with the change.

Failover, disaster recovery, uptime and network service commitments also come into focus. With cloud-based networks, network teams understand that they can’t address these items alone. They must work with cloud vendors, both technically and contractually.

I recently visited a small company with 20 employees.
