The agentic AI tool is powered by codex-1, a version of OpenAI\u2019s o3 reasoning model which is optimized for coding tasks.<\/p>\n<aside data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"hawk-base\"\/>\n<p>During training of codex-1, OpenAI said it aimed to \u201calign outputs closely with human coding preferences and standards\u201d. All told, codex-1 consistently produces &#8220;cleaner&#8221; code outputs compared to its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/software\/development\/openai-wants-developers-using-its-new-gpt-4-1-models-but-how-do-they-compare-to-claude-and-gemini-on-coding-tasks\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/software\/development\/openai-wants-developers-using-its-new-gpt-4-1-models-but-how-do-they-compare-to-claude-and-gemini-on-coding-tasks\">o3 reasoning model<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCodex can perform tasks for you such as writing features, answering questions about your codebase, fixing bugs, and proposing pull requests for review; each task runs in its own cloud sandbox environment, preloaded with your repository,\u201d the company said in a blog post.<\/p>\n<p>The new AI agent is conveniently integrated within <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence-ai\/369965\/what-is-chatgpt-and-what-does-it-mean-for-businesses\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/technology\/artificial-intelligence-ai\/369965\/what-is-chatgpt-and-what-does-it-mean-for-businesses\">ChatGPT<\/a>, the company explained in a blog post. Users can access Codex through the sidebar in the chatbot and assign it tasks by typing a simple prompt and clicking \u2018Code\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want to ask Codex a question about your codebase, click \u201cAsk\u201d. Each task is processed independently in a separate, isolated environment preloaded with your codebase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Codex is capable of reading and editing files, and can run commands such as test harnesses, linters, and type checkers, OpenAI noted.
