Indeed, research from IDC in late 2024 noted that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/missed-expectations-are-driving-the-cloud-repatriation-trend-but-its-not-as-bad-as-you-might-think\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/missed-expectations-are-driving-the-cloud-repatriation-trend-but-its-not-as-bad-as-you-might-think\"><u>growing \u2018cloud repatriation\u2019 trend had been driven by lackluster results<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/public-cloud\/what-is-cloud-repatriation\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/public-cloud\/what-is-cloud-repatriation\">Cloud repatriation<\/a> entered the corporate lexicon in early 2023 when 37 Signals &#8211; the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/software-as-a-service-saas\/362655\/what-is-saas\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/software-as-a-service-saas\/362655\/what-is-saas\">SaaS <\/a>firm behind Basecamp &#8211; revealed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/370111\/37-signals-save-7m-abandoning-cloud-prices-grotesque\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/370111\/37-signals-save-7m-abandoning-cloud-prices-grotesque\"><u>plans to move back on-prem and save money<\/u><\/a> due to rising cloud costs.<\/p>\n<p>The project has since paid dividends for the company, with CTO David Heinemeier Hansson claiming the firm <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/37-signals-says-it-saved-dollar1-million-by-abandoning-cloud-infrastructure\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/37-signals-says-it-saved-dollar1-million-by-abandoning-cloud-infrastructure\"><u>saved over $1 million within a matter of months<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-6SbTZ6LhgtGjFs8ZDkUPDA\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-6SbTZ6LhgtGjFs8ZDkUPDA slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up today and you will receive a free copy of our Future Focus 2025 report &#8211; the leading guidance on AI, cybersecurity and other IT challenges as per 700+ senior executives<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cloud costs have also been a recurring concern among adopters over the last two and a half years, with prices skyrocketing in late 2022. Alternative research aligning with Gartner\u2019s shows cloud implementation and management failures have been a leading factor behind rising costs.<\/p>\n<p>Research from Boomi in association with Forrester in mid-2024 showed many companies were slow to introduce cost remediation tactics, for example, or lacked a clear understanding of their own infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>This has a domino effect on the enterprise, the study found, and exacerbates wasteful spending. Statistics from the study showed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/short-sighted-cost-management-strategies-are-to-blame-for-spiraling-cloud-computing-bills\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/cloud-management\/short-sighted-cost-management-strategies-are-to-blame-for-spiraling-cloud-computing-bills\"><u>nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents exceeded their cloud budgets<\/u><\/a> in the fiscal year running 2023-2024.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"firms-can-t-afford-to-botch-cloud-adoption-in-the-age-of-ai-3\">Firms can\u2019t afford to botch cloud adoption in the age of AI<\/h2>\n<p>Enterprises flocking to the cloud are doing so at a critical time, according to Gartner.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28181\/what-is-ai\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28181\/what-is-ai\">AI <\/a>and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28071\/what-is-machine-learning\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/strategy\/28071\/what-is-machine-learning\">machine learning<\/a>-related demands are expected to surge in the coming years, the study found, meaning organizations simply can\u2019t afford to botch adoption strategies.<\/p>\n<p>The consultancy predicts that 50% of cloud compute resources will be devoted to AI workloads by 2019, marking a huge increase from less than 10% in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis all points to a fivefold increase in AI-related cloud workloads by 2029,\u201d said Joe Rogus, director of advisory at Gartner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is the time for organizations to assess whether their data centers and cloud strategies are ready to handle this surge in AI and ML demand. In many cases, they might need to bring AI to where the data is to support this growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"multi-cloud-challenges-continue-3\">Multi-cloud challenges continue<\/h2>\n<p>The rise of generative AI has run in parallel with heightened interest in hybrid and multi-cloud options for enterprises, with many flocking to the latter due to the flexibility of working with multiple providers.<\/p>\n<p>This too has its problems, however, and Gartner found many enterprises are encountering sizable hurdles, such problems with interoperability and poor overall results, which are contributing to the air of growing dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany organizations that have adopted multi-cloud architecture find connecting to and between providers a challenge,\u201d the consultancy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lack of interoperability between environments can slow cloud adoption, with Gartner predicting more than 50% of organisations will not get the expected results from their <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/34476\/what-is-multi-cloud\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.itpro.com\/cloud\/34476\/what-is-multi-cloud\">multi-cloud<\/a> implementations by 2029.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-more-from-itpro\"><span>MORE FROM ITPRO<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While cloud adoption continues apace, new research from Gartner suggests a significant portion of enterprises will experience \u2018dissatisfaction\u2019 in their journey in the coming years.
