As part of its \u201cgolden opportunity for American AI,\u201d the company will\u00a0train AI models and roll out AI and cloud-based applications with this investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">\u201cIn FY 2025, Microsoft is on track to invest approximately $80 billion to build out AI-enabled data centers to train AI models and deploy AI and cloud-based applications around the world,\u201d wrote Brad Smith, vice chair and president of Microsoft, in a <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/on-the-issues\/2025\/01\/03\/the-golden-opportunity-for-american-ai\/\">Jan. 3 blog post<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. \u201cMore than half of this total investment will be in the United States, reflecting our commitment to this country and our confidence in the American economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Last year, Microsoft said it would invest more than $35 billion across 14 countries within three years to construct AI and cloud data center infrastructure. It is also collaborating with <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/2024\/09\/17\/blackrock-global-infrastructure-partners-microsoft-and-mgx-launch-new-ai-partnership-to-invest-in-data-centers-and-supporting-power-infrastructure\/\">BlackRock and MGX<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> to form an international investment fund that contributes up to an additional $100 billion for AI infrastructure and the AI supply chain, Smith wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">\u201cMicrosoft is all-in on AI much like they were with the cloud, and AI has eclipsed their cloud efforts much like the cloud eclipsed Windows,\u201d says Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, via email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Tony Harvey, a senior director analyst at Gartner, also sees the investment as a sign that Microsoft is committed to AI and must invest to lead the market in this area. AWS announced <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/news\/aws\/aws-investment-georgia-ai-cloud-infrastructure\">a $11 billion investment<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in AI and cloud infrastructure in Georgia, and Google plans to spend $100 billion on AI over time, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said last year, <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-04-16\/deepmind-ceo-says-google-will-spend-more-than-100-billion-on-ai?leadSource=uverify%20wall&amp;sref=dwjOWhch&amp;embedded-checkout=true\">according to<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> Bloomberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Earlier this month, AI hyperscaler Coreweave opened <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/coreweave-announces-two-initial-data-centers-hosting-nvidia-hopper-gpus-now-operational-in-the-united-kingdom-accelerating-ai-infrastructure-302348885.html\">two AI data centers<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> featuring Nvidia GPUs. Oracle and Elon Musk\u2019s xAI have also pursued billion-dollar investments in AI data centers and their hardware, Harvey notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">AI infrastructure spurred an 82% rise in hyperscale data center capital expenditures in the third quarter of 2024, according to research firm Dell\u2019Oro Group\u2019s <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.delloro.com\/news\/hyperscale-capex-surges-82-percent-in-3q-2024-fueled-by-ai-infrastructure-spending\/\">Data Center IT Capex Quarterly Report<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\"><span data-testid=\"related-article-title\" class=\"RelatedArticle-Title\">Related:<\/span><a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.networkcomputing.com\/data-center-networking\/the-weirdest-network-issue-ive-had-to-troubleshoot\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\">The Weirdest Network Issue I&#8217;ve Had to Troubleshoot<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Expect hyperscalers to invest in AI data centers outside typical locations like Virginia, according to Harvey. He notes that xAI has created AI data centers in a factory in Tennessee, AWS invested in a data center in Georgia, Microsoft constructed a $3 billion data center campus in Racine, Wisconsin, and Google is investing in Indiana and Kansas City, Harvey says. Meanwhile, Meta revealed plans for a <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opportunitylouisiana.gov\/news\/meta-selects-northeast-louisiana-as-site-of-10-billion-artificial-intelligence-optimized-data-center-governor-jeff-landry-calls-investment-a-new-chapter-for-state\">$10 billion AI data center<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in northeast Louisiana.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Power Constraints Affect Data Center Capacity\" style=\"scroll-margin-top:10rem;scroll-snap-margin-top:10rem\">Power Constraints Affect Data Center Capacity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">GenAI in particular is generating a sharp increase in electricity demand as hyperscalers expand data center capacity, according to Deloitte\u2019s \u201cTMT Predictions 2025\u201d <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/insights\/industry\/technology\/technology-media-and-telecom-predictions.html#genai-power-consumption\">report on generative AI<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. In November Gartner <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024-11-12-gartner-predicts-power-shortages-will-restrict-40-percent-of-ai-data-centers-by-20270\">berichtet<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> that 40% of AI data centers will be limited operationally by power availability by 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">As companies invest in building out AI-enabled data centers, a high demand for power could hamper those efforts. In fact, AI will affect how data centers will be built, according to Enderle. Companies may choose warm water cooling over air, or chilled water, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Meanwhile, Harvey sees AI data centers shifting to more dense and modular designs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-component=\"related-article\" class=\"RelatedArticle\"><span data-testid=\"related-article-title\" class=\"RelatedArticle-Title\">Related:<\/span><a class=\"RelatedArticle-RelatedContent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.networkcomputing.com\/data-center-networking\/the-status-of-optical-transport-equipment\" target=\"_self\" data-discover=\"true\">The Status of Optical Transport Equipment<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">\u201cAI data centers need to be designed around 50 kilowatt (kW) to 100kW per rack with close physical proximity between devices,\u201d Harvey says. \u201cThe older data center designs of 5kW-20kW per rack that spread out will be less popular \u2014 although there will still be need for traditional CPU-based compute.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Gartner <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024-11-12-gartner-predicts-power-shortages-will-restrict-40-percent-of-ai-data-centers-by-20270\">predicts<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> that by 2027, data centers will require 500 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power to run \u201cincremental AI-optimized servers,\u201d an increase of 2.6 times from 195 TWh in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">In its TMT Predictions report, Deloitte said that data centers comprise only 2% of global electricity consumption, or 536 terawatt-hours in 2025, but the growth of GenAI training and inference grows faster than \u201cother uses and applications.\u201d It says global data center electricity consumption could double to about 1,065 TWh by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Enderle predicts that nuclear and geothermal will be the key types of energy powering data centers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">\u201cMicrosoft and Google are looking at new or refurbished nuclear plants,\u201d Enderle says. \u201cGeothermal is less common.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Power generation is a critical issue as new data centers are built out, Enderle explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">\u201cEnergy is a significant problem, and there are efforts to create small-scale nuclear reactors (GE has a prototype out) that can be collocated and require little to no maintenance to resolve this problem,\u201d Enderle says. \u201cBut the grid is not at all ready for these kinds of loads, making it critical that power-generation advancements be aggressively applied as these data centers are built out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script defer=\"\" async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v18.0\" data-ot-ignore=\"true\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this month, Microsoft announced it would invest about $80 billion in data centers powered by AI.
