We also occasionally get hardware launches at these shows, but they don&#8217;t happen often.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 showcase promises to be a busy one, with notable updates across all of Google&#8217;s flagship software and AI platforms. It&#8217;s AI that can &#8216;see&#8217; the world and respond to prompts via voice, video, and more.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve previously seen some elements of Project Astra <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/artificial-intelligence\/weve-tried-google-pixel-9s-new-gemini-astra-upgrade-and-users-are-in-for-a-real-treat\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/artificial-intelligence\/weve-tried-google-pixel-9s-new-gemini-astra-upgrade-and-users-are-in-for-a-real-treat\">roll out to Gemini<\/a>, but there&#8217;s plenty more to come.<\/p>\n<p>Google&#8217;s ultimate aim with Project Astra is to make assistant technologies that are able to respond to any kind of request, in real time, using natural language \u2013 and we&#8217;re excited to see where the tech goes next.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-even-more-android-16-news-3\">4. Think behind-the-scenes improvements in terms of security and privacy, as well as more user-facing upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Google may well take the opportunity of Google I\/O 2025 to tell us about updates coming to big apps such as Gmail and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/tag\/google-maps\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/tag\/google-maps\">Google Maps<\/a>, too: we do of course see updates to these apps <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/software\/google-maps-has-just-been-updated-with-a-subtle-but-important-design-change\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/software\/google-maps-has-just-been-updated-with-a-subtle-but-important-design-change\">throughout the rest<\/a> of the year as well, but sometimes major announcements are held back specifically for I\/O.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-a-closer-look-at-wear-os-6-3\">5. A new Pinterest rival<\/h2>\n<p>One of the last-minute rumors swirling around Google I\/O 2025 is that we might see a Pinterest-like platform rolled out by Google, as per <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/google-developing-software-ai-agent-pinterest-like-feature-ahead-o\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/google-developing-software-ai-agent-pinterest-like-feature-ahead-o\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\">The Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Google hasn&#8217;t had much success in terms of social media apps, but it&#8217;s been a while since it made any real efforts in this area, so we may hear something on May 20.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, the new app will be based on image search results on Google, enabling users to collect together different pictures into collections, which can then be shared with other people. If something like this is in the pipeline, then Google I\/O 2025 offers the perfect platform from which to announce it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-tweaks-and-refinements-for-google-chrome-3\">7. While we haven&#8217;t heard rumors of any major updates, lots of smaller tweaks and refinements are likely.<\/p>\n<p>Something we haven&#8217;t seen yet, and which ties into what we&#8217;ve already talked about, is Gemini integration in Chrome: right now, it&#8217;s only available in individual Google web apps. This could be something Google could be working on, though it also knows Chrome is under scrutiny for the extent to which it promotes Google&#8217;s other apps and services.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-what-we-re-not-expecting\"><span>What we&#8217;re not expecting<\/span><\/h3>\n<h2 id=\"1-new-pixels-and-tablets-3\">1. However, with the Pixel 9a already out, and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/phones\/google-pixel-phones\/google-pixel-10-rumors\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/phones\/google-pixel-phones\/google-pixel-10-rumors\">Google Pixel 10<\/a> phones not expected to break cover until August, this should be a mostly hardware-free show.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-the-return-of-the-chromecast-or-other-retired-projects-3\">2. The return of the Chromecast (or other retired projects)<\/h2>\n<p>Google isn&#8217;t shy about abandoning projects, and we won&#8217;t be hearing anything about Google Assistant at I\/O. It first appeared in 2016, nine years ago \u2013 but it&#8217;s now very much on the way out as Google <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/artificial-intelligence\/its-official-google-assistant-will-be-retired-for-phones-this-year-with-gemini-taking-over\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/computing\/artificial-intelligence\/its-official-google-assistant-will-be-retired-for-phones-this-year-with-gemini-taking-over\">makes the switch to Gemini<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another product range that Google has unceremoniously discarded is its Chromecast line of streaming dongles, and we&#8217;re not going to hear anything about them at the event next week. The future is all about the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/televisions\/streaming-devices\/google-tv-streamer\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/televisions\/streaming-devices\/google-tv-streamer\">Google TV Streamer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-you-might-also-like\"><span>You might also like<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re just about ready for another Google I\/O event, where Google shows off the major software updates it&#8217;s been working on, and gives us an idea about what we can expect for the rest of the year.
