APAC data center firm Digital Edge has signed a renewable energy deal in the Philippines to procure hydroelectric power.
Philippines renewable energy provider, First Gen Corporation, this week announced a deal with Digital Edge to power its NARRA1 data center in Manila.
First Gen will directly supply electricity to support the operations of the NARRA1 data center, located inside the Laguna Technopark in Biñan, Laguna, from the Pantabangan-Masiway and Casecnan hydroelectric complex in Nueva Ecija.
“We are proud to operate a world-class data center that meets the growing demand for digital infrastructure while upholding the highest standards of environmental responsibility,” said Digital Edge Philippines country manager, Vic Barrios. “By design, NARRA1 is already one of the most energy- and water-efficient data centers in the region. Through our partnership with First Gen, it will now also be powered by renewable hydroelectricity—further strengthening our commitment to sustainable operations.”
First announced in December 2021 as a joint venture between Digital Edge and Threadborne Group, the 10MW data center launched in March 2023. The facility offers capacity for up to 2,200 racks across 12 data halls and 5,200 sqm (55,970 sq ft) of colocation space.
“The need for data centers is growing, and operating these requires large-scale, uninterrupted power with the lowest possible carbon emissions. We look forward to working with Digital Edge as they continue to make progress in their decarbonization journey, not just with a supply of reliable, low-emission, and cost-competitive electricity, but solutions that will help optimize their energy usage,” added First Gen’s chief customer engagement officer, Carlo Vega.
Founded in 1998 as a subsidiary of First Philippine Holdings Corporation (part of the Lopez Group conglomerate), First Gen’s renewable energy portfolio includes close to 300MW of hydro power generation, 160MW from wind and solar facilities, and almost 1.2GW of geothermal capacity from subsidiary Energy Development Corporation. The company also operates four natural gas facilities totaling more than 2GW.
Filipino ICT firm Converge has previously signed a 14MW geothermal deal with First Gen subsidiary, Greencore Geothermal.
Headquartered in Singapore, Stonepeak-owned Digital Edge was established in early 2020. It owns and operates 21 data centers with more than 500MW of capacity either in service or in development, with another 300MW held for future development, across strategic locations in Japan, Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
The company previously signed a 500MW renewable energy partnership with Stonepeak-owned Peak Energy to “pursue renewable energy production projects designed to power Digital Edge data centers across the APAC region.”
