AWS retires Private 5G service

Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched AWS Private 5G in November 2021, aiming to simplify the deployment and scaling of private 5G mobile networks for enterprises. This managed service allowed businesses to establish private networks within their facilities in days, rather than months, by automating the setup and maintenance of small cell radio units, servers, 5G core and radio access network (RAN) software, and subscriber identity modules (SIM cards). Initially, AWS Private 5G supported 4G LTE connectivity, with plans to incorporate 5G capabilities in the future. The service was designed to provide high reliability, low latency, and secure network access, catering to various use cases such as smart manufacturing, security applications, campus connectivity, and worker productivity. However, as of May 2025, AWS has retired the Private 5G service. The decision to discontinue the service was influenced by several factors, including the rapid evolution of 5G technology, the emergence of alternative private network solutions, and the need to focus on other strategic initiatives within AWS’s portfolio.

The retirement of AWS Private 5G reflects the dynamic nature of the telecommunications industry, where technological advancements and market demands continually shape service offerings. Enterprises seeking private network solutions can explore other options, including partnerships with telecommunications providers and alternative cloud-based services, to meet their connectivity and operational requirements.
